ABOUT

Wild Art Lab is an outdoor process art class for children ages 4–10 that invites curiosity, creativity, and exploration through open-ended making. Rooted In Play Outdoor Learning combines art, nature, and child-led discovery to create a space where children can experiment with materials, follow their ideas, and develop their own creative voice.

Wild Art Lab is built on the belief that creativity grows through exploration—not through copying, perfecting a technique, or creating a predetermined final product. Children are invited to wonder, take creative risks, solve problems, and discover what happens when they engage deeply with materials and ideas.

Through thoughtfully prepared invitations and a wide variety of materials, children explore color, texture, movement, form, and collaboration while developing confidence in their own creative process. Each child’s approach, choices, and discoveries are valued.

OUR CREATIVE HABITS

Each season of Wild Art Lab is guided by a specific creative habit—a way of thinking and creating that helps children grow as creative thinkers. These habits provide a lens for exploration and encourage children to approach art, materials, and the world around them with curiosity and intention.

Creative Habits We Explore

  • Experiment — trying new things, testing ideas, and discovering what happens through exploration

  • Observation — noticing closely and paying attention to details, materials, and the world around us

  • Transformation — changing ordinary materials into something unexpected

  • Connection — exploring collaborative creativity and building ideas together

  • Storytelling — expressing ideas, experiences, and stories through art

  • Imagination — inventing, wondering, and exploring possibilities through original ideas

  • Stewardship — creating thoughtfully with found and recycled materials while conserving and appreciating our resources.

Throughout each season, children are offered a wide variety of materials, including paint, clay, water, loose parts, recycled materials, textiles, mixed media, and occasional natural elements.

Some invitations may be inspired by artists, artistic movements, or creative concepts, but the focus is never on copying artwork or mastering techniques. Instead, children are encouraged to develop their own ideas, make meaningful choices, and explore the many possibilities that emerge through the creative process.
